Speech vs. Beer: Why All Open Source Projects Are Not Equal

Adam Tuttle wrote up a really insightful entry on what "Free" software really means to market adoption (and how it relates to ColdFusion). This is a subject I spend a lot of time discussing/researching (too much if you ask my wife), so I wanted to add a little bit of color of my own. I'm a really big fan of open source when it's "free as in speech" but I find myself becoming more and more critical of professional open source or "free as in beer". CFUnited 2009: Adobe Keynote

If you have installed the ColdFusion Builder beta in stand-alone mode, I recommend you update some of the underlying settings before adding in Flash Builder 4 beta. The standalone install of ColdFusion Builder only requires 256MB or RAM. Which is all well and good for ColdFusion Builder, but installing other plug-ins like Flash Builder 4 beta ups the requirements. ColdFusion 9 and ColdFusion Builder Beta Available

By now the ColdFusion blogosphere is buzzing with the news of two major milestones for the ColdFusion Community. First and foremost, the server they said could already do everything just learned a few more tricks. ColdFusion 9 offers advanced functionality, but its simplistic elegance makes it accessible to all level of developers. Not to be overshadowed, we also released the first public preview of ColdFusion Builder. For 14 years ColdFusion defined Rapid Application Development through its built-in services and language. Moving forward we hope to re-define RAD and push developer productivity to the next level with the combination of ColdFusion 9 and ColdFusion Builder. Software Quality, Schedule and Features

Tom Jordahl told me that "Building software is a lot like making sausage. You probably don't want to see how it's made". To a certain level he's right. Like food, software goes through an incredible transformation before it's presented that's not always pretty. Software starts off with a grand vision where the possibilities are endless. Over time deadlines get closer and closer while specs get smaller and smaller and eventually you are forced to readjust that vision to fit reality. ColdFusion is no different. Adobe ColdFusion 8 won the Web Development award at the 2008 Great Indian Developer Summit. The award highlights web development and deployment tools that help developers and designers push the boundaries of the web. ColdFusion beat out ASP.NET and Oracle WebCenter for the coveted prize. The award is a good indicator that ColdFusion's popularity is growing rapidly in India. I'm The New Product Manager for ColdFusion

It's official. I'm the new Product Manager for ColdFusion and Bolt. After a considerable amount of internal debate, I decided to step up and take the lead of the product I love so much. I don't mean to sound sappy, but I'm incredibly humbled that the rest of the ColdFusion team trusts me enough to fulfill this role. I'm honored to follow in the footsteps of people I admire.
