I'm The New Product Manager for ColdFusion

It's official. I'm the new Product Manager for ColdFusion and Bolt. After a considerable amount of internal debate, I decided to step up and take the lead of the product I love so much. I don't mean to sound sappy, but I'm incredibly humbled that the rest of the ColdFusion team trusts me enough to fulfill this role. I'm honored to follow in the footsteps of people I admire.

I'm positive that there is no better job in Adobe than working with Ben and the rest of the Evangelist team. I got to travel the world like a rock star and share the awesomeness of ColdFusion with everyone I met. However, I've never been one to turn down a challenge.

I believe that ColdFusion and CFML are at a critical crossroad. After 13 years, critics outside of the ColdFusion community expect us to go quietly into the night; to abandon CFML and move to unproven platforms… all for the sake of popularity. These critics throw stones out of fear and ignorance. We cannot let them determine our future. They will continue to write that ColdFusion has peaked, and someday they will be right.

That being said, I do not plan to focus on our competition at all. If we spend our time watching what everyone else is doing, we're doomed to compete with them. If we want to start another revolution, we need to look forward, with our own ideas and our own innovation. Revolutions are born from minorities who challenge the status quo. The ColdFusion community is ripe and I believe it is our job at Adobe to light the fuse and feed the fire.

I believe that ColdFusion is the best platform for building web applications. I believe the sums of its strengths are far greater than that of its weaknesses. I believe that all of ColdFusion's problems are solvable. I believe that regardless of size or popularity, the ColdFusion community contains the best damn programmers on the Internet and I plan to do everything in my power not to let them down.

Excellent! Now... can you get some better codenames for future versions? I'm thinking, instead of "Sully", let's have "Churchill". Then maybe "Maduro".

This is great news. Rock on...

Adam mentions being humbled by the ColdFusion team trusting him to do this job; well, as a member of the ColdFusion Sales part of the team, let me turn that around and express my gratefulness to him: I am grateful and excited that he was willing to take on this big new challenge because it's easy to see how much he cares about ColdFusion, the ColdFusion community, and the future of both. Thanks, Adam! Adrock on!

Congratulations! You appear to be the kind of person who could take CF to the next level. I would suggest: 1) Most of the popular API’s don’t have CF support. For example, I’m not aware of any Google API’s that have CF libraries (they consistently offer: Java, .Net, PHP, JavaScript and even Python and Objective-C libraries). This is a twofold problem: CF devs are disadvantaged and the world doesn’t see CF as a preferred platform. Adobe should work with Google (as well as other popular services) and the CF community to get CF support for the most popular service API’s. 2) It would be cool if CF enabled the generation of user experiences deployable on html/css/javascript and Flash with the same code. 3) It would be nice to have a more robust user/membership management capability built into to CF – every app needs it and we’re all writing it a little differently (and redundantly) for better or worse. Best of luck!

Congratulations, and glad to hear it.

I'd second a couple of points made by previous commenters - it'd be really nice to have Adobe working with the Google API team more closely, and object creation performance is still a sore spot for many of us.

Can't wait to get Bolt released into the wild!

Congratulations Adam. Somebody needs to run the product and I can't think of anyone else I would rather have do it. Your passion for the product is truly immeasurable. For those that don't know Adam personally, he is an incredible guy and a good friend. Heck, I'm going to make him eat some of my home cooking tomorrow night right after he shows my son how to make a CF logo out of blue playdoh. ;) The king is dead, long live the king. :) Best wishes in your new role.
